Mental Skills for Young Athletes (course) splash image

Coaches lack the time within games and practices to cover the wide-range of topics within the vast realm of sports-psychology.

Get the kids exposure to independent study with something that they love. (Sports, stories, animals and themselves). The course's lessons and observations can be put into practice within their sport. These literacy skills put context to the life-changing behaviors that mature, cool, calm and collected individuals display. Parents, guardians, boosters and teachers can offer aid by supporting the search for better understanding of how teams function and individuals cope.

Young athletes are with curious minds. They are often asking "why?" Kids try to gain an understanding of all the aspects of their lives. Developing mental skills should be approached with a combination of neuroscience and sport psychology, but coaches will want to provide the athlete with both factual information as well as anecdotes that help foster emotional intelligence and social awareness.

Course is designed to improve the mental skills of young athletes aged 8 and older.

Even the older teens love its delivery style and insights. Designed to help young athletes grasp the psychological side of their sport, this course includes stories, quizzes, worksheets, points to ponder, tips and many practical tips for success.

Especially well suited for swimmers and divers and other individual sports athletes, as they often are more reflective and with a better internal focus. But team sports participants who are keen to improve themselves are able to benefit greatly too.

The mental side is often the hardest part for improving in sports. Mental strength starts with a commitment to work harder and smarter -- on the mental game. In this course, you will learn proven mental skills to improve your focus, which is the biggest challenge for athletes of all ages. You will learn how to take charge of your mind to lead yourself through intense competition with confidence, more efficiency, and less stress.

Course Modules

The main lessons within the course include:

1

The importance of mental skills training

By improving mental skills, young athletes will exhibit a positive attitude and have confidence that leads to long-term success.

Athletes face many challenges on the field, in the pool and on the court. Youngsters need to know that they can handle these challenges and improve their skills to play better.

Mental training will help you to increase your powers of concentration, self-confidence and motivation. This can be achieved through targeted, specific interventions aimed at enhancing an athlete's mental skills.

2

Module 2: The skill of awareness

Playing sports is fun and exciting. But as with any activity, there are also frustrations and disappointments. Playing your best often involves focusing on more than just the physical aspects of the game. Athletes need to practice mental skills such as focus, managing pressure and dealing with emotions in order to perform to their potential. When these skills are not present, athletes can get stressed out, frustrated or even give up too quickly. Get help in your development of the inner game. Become more self aware so you can play better and enjoy sport more!

3

Module 3: The skill of goal setting

Goal setting creates a plan of action and is often the first step in achieving success. It also makes you appreciate the milestones along your journey.

Goal-setting is a critical component of athletic participation, yet many young athletes fail to take the time to effectively set goals. Goal-setting can be a powerful tool to increase motivation, boost self esteem and accelerate athletic development.

Young athletes and their parents often struggle with goal-setting.

4

Module 4: The skill of relaxation and energizing

All young athletes have experienced the effects of adrenaline and stress. But, how do these two things work and what happens when relaxation is not present? This course shows you how to recognize the signs of exhaustion and stress. Actions can begin to regulate one's own brain before a major failure occurs.

5

Module 5: The skill of positive and productive self-talk

Positive and productive self talk is important for a young athlete because it takes the pressure off. It helps them to focus on the process, not just the outcome of their performance. When it’s missing, the athlete will likely get caught up in negative thoughts that can derail their confidence, which in turn affects both their mental game and their playing ability.

In today’s world, where many young athletes have access to the latest technology and resources, it is more necessary than ever for them to have their minds ready to play. The ability to self-talk oneself through adversity can be the difference between success and failure.

6

Module 6: The skill of creative imagery

Creative imagery, or visualizing an experience in the mind’s eye, can help young athletes achieve their goals. When young athletes practice this skill they develop greater focus and concentration, become better decision makers and are able to visualize the outcome they want.

7

Module 7: The skill of attentional control

Attentional control is important for young athletes for many reasons. Attentional control helps to focus on the task and stay calm during competition. It also helps to reduce anxiety, manage emotions, react to distractions and make good decisions. Poor attentional control can lead to frustration and even mental health issues.

8

Module 8: Creating and maintaining ideal performance states

The mental skills for young athletes described in this book will help your child learn how to be in an ideal performance state. When properly developed, these skills will enable them to have consistent practice sessions and game days. They will also be able to focus their energy appropriately on their performance so that they can perform at their best and win the coveted prize or score that they are after.

9

Module 9: Creating and maintaining ideal emotional states

At times, kids will crash at some point in their sports games or practices. It is up to the coach, teammates, guardians and even parents to get them back on track. But huge benefits come when the athlete fix comes from within. If the emotional state of a child is off, even for just a few minutes or seconds, it could make all the difference in how well that athlete performs.

10

Module 10: Team harmony

Team harmony is an important factor in the success of a team because it contributes to a sense of togetherness. Team harmony helps to build team trust and motivation, which are essential to improve sports performance. Team harmony can also be a useful tool to motivate children and older athletes to challenge themselves, because they could think that working on their physical and mental skills is fun.
