Meet South Africa’s Olympic Champ Chad le Clos

South Africa: has a population of 57.78 million people and covers 470,900 square miles. The country has a diverse history which helps explains why there are at least 35 spoken languages (10-11 official) along with 3 separate capitals.

With only 3,000-4,000 registered swimmers, South Africa has still had their share of swimming success. Karen Muir and Jonty Skinner were world record holders but never got to compete in the Olympic due to the boycott. However, Joan Harrison, Penelope (Penny) Heyns, Lyndon Ferns (relay), Roland Schoeman (relay), Darian Townsend (relay), Ryk Neethling (relay), Cameron van der Burgh, and Chad le Clos have all won Olympic gold.

Chad le Clos: won the gold in the 200-meter butterfly (beating Michael Phelps) and a silver in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2012 London Olympics then followed it up fours later with silver medals in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-metre butterfly at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Suriname is located on the northeastern coast of South America and was formerly known as Dutch Guiana. It is defined by vast swaths of tropical rainforest, Dutch colonial architecture, and a melting-pot culture. Their greatest success in swimming came in the 1988 Seoul Olympics when Anthony Nesty won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly. Coach Daryanani also serves as chair of UANA’s coaches commission.
