Prevalence of Swimmer Shoulder Pain

A study of 30 university swimmers training about 7,000-yards per day reported varying pain with the level of activity throughout a season (Paul, et al., 2020). About one-half of the swimmers reported pain with normal activities. Almost all of the swimmers had pain with strenuous activities.

Swimming Through It: Pain Reporting Behaviors

In an article published in Pediatrics, the authors explained that the guidelines for other sports “recommend vigilance when young athletes report upper extremity pain” (Cahan, et al., 2020). “However, no guidelines exist for competitive swimming.” They also explained, “Early detection of shoulder pain is imperative” because “over 8-in-10, competitive, adolescent swimmers express reluctance towards rest time for recovery.”

Hydration Reminder

Dr. Brent Wells is a chiropractor and he sent us a link to his article on hydration and back pain. His advice is consistent with nutritionists that speak at our camps. “Pay attention to your thirst level, as being thirsty is a sign that you already are somewhat dehydrated. If you are planning on exercising, you should begin hydrating before you start moving.”

Coaching Solutions from Science

ISCA is introducing a webinar series with coaches, sport scientists, and athletes discussing the art and science of coaching swimming.

The topic of our first webinar will be “Athlete Mental Health during the COVID Crisis.” The tentative date and time is October 27, 2020 at 10 am New York time. We encourage you to submit questions for the webinar.
