WHO ARE THE COPS “CITY OF PLANO SWIMMING”?

The City of Plano Swimmers (COPS) is a 650 swimmer competitive Club Swim Team that operates out of 4 swim facilities in the Plano, TX region. COPS is located in the Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas Metro area which is one of the most competitive regions within USA Swimming. COPS hosts between 5 and 7 meets during a normal swim year, including the Speedo Greater Southwest Invitational. COPS has a tradition of success, both locally and nationally, and is recognized for its perennial leadership in one of the nation’s largest LSCs, North Texas. Plano’s strong base within the community has allowed COPS to expand the programs over the past 10 years COPS provides a financially attractive and competitive coaching opportunity.

QUALIFICATIONS OF IDEAL CANDIDATE

1. A proven track-record of building successful swim programs that balance the need for a competitive swim program with developmental / learn-to-swim programs which effectively utilizes coaching staff

and swim facilities by putting athletes first. Experience as both a head coach and age group coach of a competitive swim team with prior experience managing several swim facilities. Prior experience and knowledge about how to leverage a COPS owned facility to generate revenue that will support COPS swim programs.

2. Current USA Swimming Coach Certification in Good Standing

3. Prior experience working in a non-profit organization and working with an Executive Board to establish annual business plans that support diverse swim group needs.

4. Strong interpersonal and communications skills to interface with all levels of employees, club members, athletes, parents, Board of Directors and community members.

5. Effective decision maker with team management and leadership skills and the ability to provide clear verbal or written direction to employees/swimmers/parents.

6. Up-to-date understanding of latest coaching techniques through research and continuing education.

7. Track record of swimmer retention, recruitment and development at all levels

8. Familiar with current technologies and basic social media skills.

9. Embraces a servant leadership approach to developing coaches and athletes.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT QUALIFICATIONS

1. College Degree

2. Former Competitive Swimmer (preferably some college experience)

3. 10+ years’ experience of coaching swimming

COACHING SKILLS

1. Ability to make a seasonal plan for each group assigned to coach.

2. Ability to write challenging workouts at the appropriate level.

3. Ability to monitor and answer emails and phone calls in a timely manner.

4. Ability to communicate with swimmers, parents, team staff and other team coaches.

5. Views the coaching staff as a unit and encourages and provides encouragement to all coaches regardless of their position in the team.

6. Works with Executive Director Head of Dry Side and the Executive Board to execute annual Business Plan to achieve COPS Swim Program Goals and Objectives.

7. Knows how to effectively motivate swimmers both at practice and meets.

8. Can motivate swimmers to improve performance within diverse swimmer groups possessing differing styles / strengths (ie: distance vs strength vs stroke).

COMPUTER SKILLS

1. Must have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Outlook/email, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

2. Must have ability to effectively utilize current Swim Coach software such as:

a. Team Manager

b. Team Unify

c. Meet Manager

d. SWIMS 3.0

e. On-line Meet Entries (OME)

HUMAN RELATIONS SKILLS

1. Ability to listen and process information from swimmers, parents, coaches, Office Staff, and Executive Board.

2. Maintains discipline with the workout groups assigned in accordance with COPS Code of Conduct.

3. Ability to inform parents when a swimmer is doing well or misbehaving.

4. Ability to set goals for swimmers, that are motivating to each swimmer.

5. Ability to communicate with workout groups via email weekly.

6. Ability to maintain composure while dealing with conflict in a positive manner

7. Ability to effectively prioritize and manage competing priorities/ tasks in a professional and team oriented manner

8. Ability to effectively delegate to and develop others on how to improve both their coaching effectiveness and leadership style

9. Ability to be decisive and effectively develop a team culture

WHAT IS COPS DUTIES FOR THIS POSITION?

  • Ensure that Head Coach duties are executed in accordance with COPS Bylaws

  • Establish and maintain relationships and open communications with swimmers and parents.

  • Lead the development and implementation of overall team philosophy on coaching, swimmer development, and team dynamics.

  • Establish workout groups, schedules, and criteria for advancement through collaboration with coaching staff.

  • On deck coaching and supervision of senior swimmers

  • Responsible for hiring, employee discipline and providing performance review feedback for all aquatic staff in accordance with COPS Personnel Policies and Procedures.

  • Develop and oversee training programs for all age groups which includes supervision, training and mentorship of other coaching staff.

  • Create a positive team-oriented atmosphere where swimmers learn the values of courage and perseverance.

  • All City of Plano Swimmers coaches are energetic and supporters of the sport of swimming and COPS.

  • Goal Setting – Establish and plan seasonal and yearly competition schedule for all groups.

  • Establish and maintain regular and timely communications with swimmers, parents, coach and board members.

  • The Head Swim Coach and the Executive Director with jointly keep the COPS Executive Board informed of Swim Team performance and the Aquatics Program as needed in accordance with the COPS Bylaws
  • Host periodic parent meetings to educate and inform parents.

  • Conduct regular coaching / staff meetings to effectively align coaching staff and office / administrative staff to effectively execute the annual business plan and ensure harmony between coach and dry-site staff.

  • Represent the team at swim meets, external meetings, and other required meetings or assign a delegate.

  • Bid for, sanction, and schedule COPS hosted Meets including acquiring a facility, setting the type of meet, and ensuring the staff is informed of the schedule

  • Create a schedule of the meets COPS will attend by season and type of meet

  • Build continuity between different parts of the team to provide back-up coverage, coach progression and to achieve a healthy work-life balance for coaches, staff and athletes.

  • Develop coach’s education and development plan by levering professional leadership growth opportunities within the USA Swim and local community

  • Support COPS fundraising and community support efforts

  • Ensure COPS swim team conveys a professional appearance at all Swim meets and during daily swim practice and other events.

  • Support and advocate for the Team Sponsor (Speedo USA, or other) for swim gear, practice suits, and competition suits.

  • The Head Swim Coach Position will report to the Executive Director

  • The Head Swim Coach will have autonomy to “own” the aquatics program and will collaborate with the Executive Director and the Head of Dry Side operations to execute the COPS annual Business Plan

COMPENSATION

HOW DO YOU APPLY?

This is a salaried full-time position that includes benefits. A competitive salary between $105,000-$115,000 for this position will be commensurate with experience.
