Australia is an island continent and the world’s sixth largest country (7,682,300 sq km) with a population of 26 million. Having a coastline of 35,000 km helps to explain why there are 934 swim schools, 1100 swim clubs, and 100,000 registered swimmers, Australia has produced many of the world’s top international coaches and swimmers and is second only to the United States in the number of Olympic gold medalists. This list includes Fred Lane, Fanny Durack, Boy Charlton, Clare Dennis, John Davies, Dawn Frasier, Murray Rose, David Theile, Lorraine Crapp, John Devitt, John Konrads, John Henricks, Kevin Berry, Bob Windle, Ian O’Brien, Lyn McClements, Michael Wenden, Shane Gould, Beverley Whitfield, Brad Cooper, Gail Neal, Michelle Ford, Jon
Sieben, Duncan Armstrong, Kieren Perkins, Susie O’Neill, Petra Thomas, Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Leisel Jones, Libby Trickett, Jody Henry, Stephanice Rice, Kyle Chalmers, and Mack Horton.

Rohan Taylor was born in 1968 in Melbourne before moving with his family to such places as Hong Kong and the USA where he trained under Jonty Skinner (and Craig Dillingham). In 1985 he was awarded a visiting scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport and returned home to train under the likes of Bill Sweetenham, John Rodgers, and Bernie Mulroy. After attending college in the States, he started his coaching career in Southern California before heading back to Australia in 1994. While serving as the High Performance Coach at Nunawading, he had the opportunity to coach a host of Olympic swimmers – most notably, 2008 Beijing gold medalist Leisel Jones and dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Belinda Hocking. He later served as State Head Coach for Victoria and Tasmania before taking over for Jacco Verhaeren as Australia’s National Coach. Rohan (52) and his wife Jodi have 3 daughters.

Dick Hannula: Straddling the LIne – Parent Involvement (1994)
In previous newsletters, we’ve listed many of the accolades earned by Coach Hannula. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Dick and his wife Sylvia have 3 sons and one daughter along with 13 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. All 3 sons were world ranked swimmers while their daughter competed at the national level. Debbie went on to become a judge, Dan a trial lawyer, Dave a dentist, and Richard (Dick) a high school principal.

Maybe Colleges Should Be Adding Sports, Not Dropping Them (7/10/20)
by Eben Novy-Williams
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of colleges that have been dropping their sports teams. This trend has escalated since Covid-19 pandemic changed the world. Novy-Williams’ article analyses the situation and comes to the conclusion that many schools would make out better if they actually increased the number of sports. One way or the other, don’t wait until your program has been placed on the chopping block before you react. Be proactive now and spread the word.
