This course is designed for students interested in learning about a wide range of activities that happen on the water. 

Everything gets lumped together within this boating title.

The course covers many of the basics of boating and presents a wide view of a water-filled landscape that including safety, skills, techniques, leadership, youth engagement, motivational stories, and community access points.

Introduction 

In this lesson, students learn about the different types of boats. Learn how to spot and choose the right kind of boat for various needs. 

No introduction is complete without learning about the basics of boating and waterfront safety, including how to wear a life jacket and how to avoid accidents.

Basic Skills

In this lesson, students learn the basic skills of moving in the water and the different points of emphasis. Wind, currents, waves, sun, temperature, darkness and warning signals are introduced. Get a grip as to how to row a boat, how to paddle a canoe, and how to float in the water.

Learn about the different types of knots that are used in boating.

Techniques

In this lesson, students learn more advanced boating techniques, such as how to steer a boat and how to navigate a river.

Learn about the different types of fishing that can be done, and what can not be done, from a boat.

Jet Skiing

Students learn the basics of jet skiing, including how to operate a jet ski, how to stay safe on the water, and how to have fun.

  • Jet skis
  • Helmets, jackets, sunscreen, gear, first-aid kit, emergency action plans.
  • Launching and the water's edge.
  • Behaviors and properties of water, flat and otherwise.

Begin by reviewing the safety rules of jet skiing. Demonstrate how to operate a jet ski. Have students practice operating jet skis in a safe area. Review the safety rules again. Let students have fun jet skiing. Thinking about tricks.

Students are assessed on their ability to operate a jet ski safely and have fun. Students who are new to jet skiing get more hands-on instruction and supervision. Students who are more experienced, allow them to explore more of the lake or river.

Advanced

Have students research the history of jet skiing and write a report on their findings. Have students create a video of themselves jet skiing and share it with the class.

Leadership

In this lesson, students learn about the importance of leadership in boating, sailing, journeys and navigating. They will learn how to be a good leader and how to motivate others to follow their lead.

Youth Engagement

In this lesson, students learn about how to engage their children and youth in boating activities. They learn how to create fun and engaging programs that attract young people to the water in confident, respectful, boating situations.

Motivational Stories

In this lesson, students are exposed to some motivational stories of famous boaters, and some epic failures too. These stories can inspire folks and guide them to set goals to achieve their own experiences in boating.

Diversity In Aquatics Rowing Chair Brannon Johnson.

Diversity In Aquatics Rowing Chair Brannon Johnson. Brannon is the head coach and Owner at BLJ Community Rowing, one of the most diverse community rowing programs in the Philadelphia metro area. At 15, she learned to row at the Fairmount Park Community Rowing Program. Johnson attended the University of Texas on a full scholarship, won medals, and competed in prestigious races, including the Henley Royal Regatta in London. In 2013, she founded BLJ Rowing - one of the country's only Black female-owned Row Clubs. Since its founding, BLJ Rowing has taught more than 1,500 people to row. More than 50 percent of her students have been Black and Brown people from the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware Tri-State areas.

In this lesson, students learn about the different community access points at local and regional waterfronts. Learn where to go to boat and how to get more involved in the various boating communities.
